I AM ELON

A quarterly multimedia column profiling an Elon University student in his or her own voice.

  • Jason Waterman says challenges are opportunities, not obstacles. He applies this philosophy to all parts of his life: coursework, new experiences and, above all, on the soccer field.
  • {quote}I'm very spontaneous, very unexpected,{quote} says Justin Pierce, one of the drum majors for Elon's marching band. Justin plays trombone in multiple groups and is the president of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.
  • “Nature has been vital for my own development, and it has made me an advocate for getting kids outdoors,” says Cara McClain. Cara's research examines the impact experiences in nature can have on children.
  • Ciera Martinez '15 is already bridging the education gap. The early childhood education major and Spanish minor works with children of all ages throughout the community to help pave the way to their future successes in school.
  • Aaron Summers remembers watching planes take off and land as a boy, entranced by seeing something so massive take flight. Now, he's studying aerospace engineering and pursuing music, his other love, by singing in an a Capella group.
  • Broadcast journalism major Addie Haney's innate curiosity has led her down many paths at Elon, from spending a semester in Turkey, to dancing as part of Elon's Finest and working with Elon Student Television.
  • Gina Maini will walk across one last stage at Elon to receive a diploma before she moves to New York City. The music theater major and fluent Spanish speaker credits her parents' support for her ambition and confidence.
  • Lei Lei Hairston is much more than a power forward on Elon's women's basketball team. She also works as an admissions tour guide and is studying communications in hopes of reporting the news after graduating.
